The Beginning: From Girlfriend to Bride-to be

It was on a Wednesday, December 31st at 11:50 PM.   I am sitting(OK, more like sprawling) on my boyfriend's bed, feeling the languid effects of the Sangria that his mother had graciously offered me throughout the night. We were watching television, flipping between "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street", when my boyfriend turns the volume down and starts fumbling around his room.  I  pay him no mind as my bladder suddenly lets me know that urgent matters are at hand.

I get up to go to the bathroom, when my boyfriend yells "Wait!"

I turn around to let him know that I need to go, and he holds a box in front of me.  I say "Oh, a present!" and quickly open the box, my bladder protesting all the way.  Inside the box was a red velvet ring case.  My boyfriend shyly looks down, clears his throat, and sputters,"I just wanted you to know that I appreciate you, and that you deserve...."

"OH, WHAT A PRETTY RING, THANK YOU!" I exclaim, and I put the ring on my right ring finger (yes I did ladies).  "But..." my boyfriend says but all he felt was the wind from me as I jetted into the bathroom.  I heard some mutterings from him but was too busy feeling relief to notice.

When I came back out, I made myself comfortable in the bed and prepared to call it a night, it was now 11:58 PM. My boyfriend comes over and he says dryly, and I said "You could put the ring on your left finger..." "Why?" (It was the Sangria ladies) and he looks shocked, then annoyed.  He gets down on one knee and says to me in a voice reserved for the slow and dim-witted, "This is an engagement ring and I am trying to propose to you.." All I heard was the word "engagement". The word ricocheted through my ear canal, bounced throughout my cerebrum and I finally woke up from my Sangria- induced haze.

"You want to marry me?!" I squeaked.  He smiles and says, "Yes". "For real?" I say, and he nods and says, "Will you be my wife?"I open my mouth to answer and a hiccup comes out.  I try again. "YES!!!!" and I give him a big kiss and a hug, while he looked very relieved by my answer.  Suddenly, we hear fireworks and cheering from outside his house, it is now 12 AM. My fiance and I turn towards each other and said "Happy New Year!" and then retired for the night.
